Should restaurants be required to list calories and fat grams on their menus? This would have to be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Patrons go to a restaurant to enjoy a quality meal cooked by a qualified chef and the patrons are responsible for their choice of food that is ordered. Although I do not agree with this I do believe that ingredients of the meal should be listed under each listed item. This way for example the patron chooses a Carbonara style pasta dish, the contents of this meal should be listed as it contains a lot of calories. The patron is then able to decide whether or not the ingredients in the meal will be a benefit or hindrance to there health.
A patron is also responsible for the choice of restaurant they wish to eat at and would be fully aware of the types of food that would be list on the menu. For example, if I was to go to an Italian restaurant, I know that the menu will contain pasta and pizza dishes. Pasta is high in carbohydrates and if I was someone who was trying to lose weight would more than likely choose to avoid an Italian restaurant.
In regards to restaurants listing calories and grams of fat: The laws in Australia currently state that only fast food restaurants are required to list the number of calories and grams of fat per item on the menu. Personally I believe this to be a good thing as a lot of people eat fast food with out understanding the health issues of what they are eating. However restaurants generally use fresh un-processed ingredients and therefore I do not agree that they should be required to also provide this information for each item listed on their menus.
The world today is such a politically correct place to live in. You cant walk into a person of another culture without feeling like you may offend them in someway. This is just another aspect of political correctness and that a persons health is the responsibility of everybody else rather than the person taking the responsibility for themselves.
We are starting to become an obese world due to the lack of accountability on ones health, our children are the most obese the world has ever known and the human race is eating themselves into extinction. Just because an icecream is placed in front of you doesn’t mean you have to read the lable of calories and grams of fat. Everyone knows icecream is bad for you so why would you need to read how bad it is for you.
